About the event
Writing workshop – hosted by victoria.
This will be an eight-week workshop, focusing on the (sadly) disappearing art of letter-writing, by hand.
Each session (an hour and half long, including a fifteen-minute break) will begin with a discussion,
led by Victoria but all will be invited to contribute, looking at published correspondence - for
example letters written by famous writers such as John Steinbeck and CS Lewis; and different
sorts of letters, such as those written ‘To the Editor’ in publications such as the Daily Telegraph.
We will scrutinise the succinctness of the messages contained, and why (if?) this establishes
letter-writing as a vital method of communication. We will ask ourselves what it is (if anything?)
about a letter that speaks powerfully, and what do the words say about the subject matter and the
author of the letter?
We will also, of course, write our own letters – group members will write to each other; each one
replying to the letter they receive. Victoria will also arrange a ‘pen friend’ scheme throughout the
duration of the course with members of another writing group, in a different part of the country.
At the end of the eight-week course a selection of the letters will be printed in a special booklet,
called ‘Pen to Paper’, for all to keep as a souvenir.
Cost of the course: £40 per person (£5 a session) to include paper, pen, tea / coffee and cake (or
biscuits.) Course will be limited to eight people.
Dates: Friday 1 st September, through each Friday morning until 20 th October. 9.30 am – 11 am, at
Artistic Fields studio, 12 Upper Olland Street, Bungay.
